Before and after pruning

Vineyard work does not stop once the grapes have been harvested.

The weeds must be brought under control and the vines pruned before the next crop bursts forth.

Despite the added cost, we have always hand pruned our wines and used manual and mechanical means to control pests and weeds. We have not used insecticides or herbicides since starting the vineyard some 35 years ago.

We use a mechanical Clemens undervine weeder which cuts (scarifies) the area under the vine, thus cutting the roots of any weeds. It uses a sensor bar to ensure the vine is not damaged. Any weeds which remain are removed manually using a hand hoe.
