What our vistors have to say
Go ahead – stay in Coonawarra
“Though Coonawarra isn’t choking with places to stay, you don’t need anything more than Dennis Vice’s charming mid-vineyard Villa Room for two. You will want to take the wines with you, so you can sip them later and be reminded of a roomy suite, a good night’s sleep and waking up looking at the sunshine on the vines. Idyllic. The breakfast provisions supplied so you can cook your own before heading out are a great touch.”

“Great Location, quaint and lovely spot!”
Great Location! The room with a view was lovely. Denis was great…….wine tasting and provisions for breakfast were awesome! We had a lovely sunset walk that evening and dinner at Piper’s of Penola! First Class!
Just so you all know, there is no wifi available. The only spot in town is at the information centre!

“Amazing!”
Thank you Dennis for a quick and easy transaction and even more so for the amazing accommodation. Room with a view is seriously one of the most romantic spots in Coonawarra, matched with amazing wine and cellar doors on every side, it’s hard to fault such a magic spot especially at sunset. Highly recommended.

“wonderful place”
We had a wonderful night in the “Room with a view” – Accommodation. It is an apartment with living room, sleeping room and a kitchen. It is a lovely place with a wonderful view into the wine-region. The view to the grape-vines is amazing. The owner-family is extremely friendly and we felt absolutely welcome during our stay. It is a wonderful place to be and we can recommend it to everyone who loves wine and a quiet location.

Looking out over the vineyard was beautiful, and the roses in the garden were at their stunning best, there was a well stocked pantry of breakfast foods which we managed to consume over our 2 day stay. Our host was very helpful with recommendations for restaurants and places to explore.
We enjoyed Highbank very much and would recommend it as a great place to stay right in the middle of Coonawarra.

“Pure Bliss”
The Room With A View is so much more than the name suggests. The view itself is truly breathtaking: oversized windows frame the expanses of autumn-toned vines and roses. Looking out onto this made us feel as though we had the beautiful Coonawarra wine region to ourselves….
The ‘room’ was a generously proportioned space consisting of a large bedroom, a living room, a bathroom with spa and a gorgeous (& well stocked) kitchen with a little table overlooking the Highbank vineyard. We felt instantly at home which was surely a result of the comfortable, eclectic and thoughtful finishings of this ‘home away from home’.
Thank you so very much Dennis & Bonnie for your warm and generous hospitality – we loved the heady hand picked roses from Bonnie’s garden and the interesting conversation with Dennis over a glass of his superb 2009 ‘Coonawarra’. This was a wonderful experience and we will definitely be back!

“Ahhh, home away from home”
We stayed in the “Room with a View” which is not just a room, it is a large apartment on the second floor of the main house. It has a small but adequate kitchen, an eating area with a view of the vineyard, a living room with a view of the vineyard, a bedroom, and a bathroom with a spa tub and shower. Great! The owner was there to greet us and ensure that we had everything we needed for the kitchen. He recommended the local butcher shop for meats and the grocery store down the road. It was a cold and rainy day and we were snug in our “Room with a View”, drinking Highbank wine and loving the experience.

“Wonderful couples retreat”
My partner and I stayed in this lovely place for our wedding weekend. The ‘room with a view’ was simply perfect for us and felt like a mini retreat. As our ceremony was at the (very close) Leconfield winery, the space of the rooms to get ready in was perfect. Breakfast ingredients are provided and we loved that they even included mushrooms and tomatoes with the toast, bacon and eggs. Can’t wait to come back and visit!!

“Tuscany transplanted”
We stayed in Room with a View for 2 nights while touring South Australia wine country between Adelaide and Melbourne in April 2012. Highbank was my favorite accommodation on our Australia trip, a Tuscan oasis in small town Australia. Room with a View was plenty spacious for our group of 3 people, with a private bedroom and living room with a sofa bed, plus a full kitchen stocked with provisions (eggs, cereals, honey, butter, fruit preserves, etc.). Every room has sweeping views of the surrounding vineyards, and the location sits in the heart of Coonawarra wine country, with practically every cellar door within a 2 mile radius. We stayed over the Easter weekend and were expecting to come and go without interaction with the owner (they left a key in the door), however we were delighted when he stopped by on our last nights stay and invited us to a private wine tasting. We spent over an hour tasting Highbank wines and I’m notembellishing a bit when I say that Highbank wines were the best I tasted on in Australia. I couldn’t have been happier with the accommodation, the location and/or the hospitality. All were top-notch at Highbank. I hope to be able to return some day.

“Perfect”
My Fiancé and I stayed in Room with a View for two nights in January 2012, much to our delight. The accommodation is attractive, spacious and comfortable, with a massive spa-bath to soak in after the day’s activities. The views of the vineyard are amazing as is the wine which we are still drinking at home, and the stars at night are a sight to behold. Bonnie and Dennis are articulate, friendly hosts who were more than willing to go out of their way to accommodate our needs. Aside from all the wineries in the area, we visited the Naracoorte Caves, and took a trip to Mount Gambier to visit the Blue Lake and the Sinkhole. It is a great spot to base yourself from to enjoy the surrounding attractions as well as enjoying all that Highbank has to offer. We will definitely return for another stay.

“A must stay”
My Fiancé and I were looking for a high quality, romantic two night stop over on our way from Melbourne to Beachport in South Australia, and booked in to Highbank for two nights. What a great decision we made when we chose Highbank. We stayed in Room with a view which was delightfully spacious with quality linen and furniture. The view from all windows is amazing with gorgeous tall trees, organic grape vines, and amazing stars at night. We enjoyed a delightful cooked breakfast with ingredients supplied by Bonnie. We treasure our conversations with her and Dennis, and the wine is nothing short of amazing. A very pleasurable stay indeed and well worth the travel to get there.

“Excellent stopover”
My wife and I stopped over for one night breaking a trip from Adelaide to Melbourne via the Coonawarra wineries. We both thought the Room with a View had a great cottage feel to it with all you need when breaking your journey. Its ideally placed along the main route but not close enough to be bothered by traffic noise. The views from all the rooms was a delight with vines into the distance or running up to the winery. Comfortable and clean and complete with some Highbank wines to taste over cheeses and cold meats we had a great evening in a cosy cottage environment.

“Fantastic – met all our expectations”
What a fantastic stay we had at Highbank. Our first night was in the Room with a View, a charming self contained first floor cottage, with the most incredible views of the vineyards and surrounding area. Our second night we spent in the Honeysuckle Cottage. Completely independent with its own drive way, the cottage is complete, spacious and caters well for couples or a couple with children. The garden is fantastic, amidst the vineyards. We sipped wine and ate cheese and crackers while watching the most beautiful sunset, all the while both of us on a swing. Very romantic, whichever one you choose. Well worth the visit. The owner, Dennis is a charismatic fellow and attended to our every need and made my wife happy by allowing her to prune some of the beautiful roses growing around the cottages. He has some incredible red wine which has won several awards and is well recognized in some of the best restaurants in Australia. The area has some interesting background and Penola, the nearest town, is only a short drive away.

“Tranquility at it’s best”
Set within the vines, this accommodation provides a cosy atmosphere in keeping with its surroundings, with views across the vineyards. Ample breakfast supplies are provided so you can make your own when you are ready. We stayed at the ‘Room with a View’, atop a double story building that has all the charm of early settlers but with the mod cons of today. Further across the vineyard is the other settler’s cottage aptly named ‘The Cottage’. Personal wine tastings can be arranged and they are hosted by the owners with all the drive and enthusiasm that can be mustered. We experienced quite an entertaining and enriching session. However, the property is in the middle of the wonderful other ‘red centre’ , the Coonawarra wines district, so tasting many other wines can be done within minutes drive or even pleasant strolls. Outstanding accommodation in a magnificent part of Australia.

“Wonderful setting and accommodation with great hospitality!”
My wife and I spent one wonderful night in The Room with a View accommodation which is just across the vineyard from the larger cottage. The building is located just inside the vineyard but feels a million miles from anywhere. We sat outside in the late afternoon sun enjoying one of Denis’s fine wines listening to nothing but the wildlife. Later that night when darkness had fallen we stood outside in silence marveling at the night sky above which is so clear thanks to the lack of light pollution, that you can see the stars so clearly it feels like they are an arms length away! The guest rooms are on the first floor above the tasting rooms and reception and all of the windows offer stunning views across the vineyard and beyond. There is a very roomy double bedroom which has a huge window opening up to vistas of the vines, this then leads into the living room which again is of a very decent size and offers the same views. The bathroom offers a large spa bath with views and separate shower. The kitchen and dining area complete the accommodation and everything is provided for you to self cater if you wish. Dennis, our lovely host, left all the necessary provisions for us to prepare a large breakfast as well as making available some of his superb wines for us to try and purchase at a greatly reduced price. He was also on hand to offer help and advice on the local area. Staying here was one of the highlights of our month in Oz and this is the perfect place to base yourself in Coonawarra to explore the wine country and further afield, knowing that at the end of the day you have ‘home’ to come back too!
